Speech Bubble Types for Comics
- Oval / Round: Standard dialogue — the most common bubble. Clean, neutral, works for any conversation.
- Thought Bubble: Scalloped cloud shape with small circles leading to the character's head. Indicates internal monologue.
- Shout / Burst: Jagged, spiky edges for yelling, explosions, or intense emotion. Use sparingly for maximum impact.
- Caption Box: Rectangular, often yellow or muted. For narration, scene-setting, or "Meanwhile..." transitions.
- Rounded Rectangle: Modern alternative to oval. Works well for webtoon and digital comics.
Comic Lettering Tips
- Tail placement matters: Point the tail at the speaking character's mouth, not their forehead or chest.
- Keep it centered: Center text vertically in the bubble. Off-center text looks amateurish.
- Watch your padding: Leave at least 20–30% empty space inside the bubble for readability.
- Font choice = tone: Bold, clean fonts for action. Handwritten fonts for intimate dialogue. All-caps for shouting.
- Export at 2x: For print, export at 2x your target resolution for clean scaling in layout software.
